Suncream and sun care are two essential things to remember for a holiday in Cornwall. Do pack suncream with a high SPF factor – SPF30 filters 97% of UVB rays, SPF50 filters 98% of UVB. But you may find SPF30 is easier to apply – especially on small children!
Whichever level of sun protection you choose, don’t forget to reapply regularly. And remember to apply enough! According to the NHS, you will need 2 teaspoons of sunscreen if you’re just covering your head, arms and neck. And if you’re covering your entire body while wearing a swimming costume, expect to use nearly 2 tablespoons of suncream. Read the full NHS article about sun care here.
Sun care and water
Time in the water will make suncream less effective – even if it is labelled waterproof. And don’t forget the ear lobes, tips of the nose and tops of the feet. It’s easy to overlook when you’re concentrating on faces, backs and shoulders!
Record breaking temperatures and gentle breezes are a perfect recipe for a long day in the sun. But please don’t get caught out. It’s easy to forget what the baking temperatures can do to delicate skin when a paddle in the sea keeps us cool.
There are plenty of shady areas on our site to keep you cool. And do stay out of the midday sun if you can – head over to our indoor pool if you need to get your feet wet to cool down! River Valley backs right onto the Pentewan Cycle Trail – this is a really cool place to be on super hot days because of the shelter from the trees. And if you want to go a little further on a bike ride or a walk, head to the Luxulyan Valley, which has some great shady spots.
Shady beaches
Our nearest beach is Pentewan – which is great if you want a day in full sun. But if you need to keep cool, some of the Roseland Peninsula beaches offer more shade. Towan, Pendower and Porthcurnick are all great options – and all three are great for rockpooling. Our Local Info pages have a section Cornwall beaches here.
Here’s to a long, hot summer – but don’t worry if you forget to pack your sunscreen, our small site shop will have some.
